Asalaam Alaykum year 2 parents, I pray you are all well.
JazakhaAllah to those parents who attended the meet the teacher/workshop on Tuesday. I hope I was able to answer any questions and concerns you may have had. As mentioned, you can contact me via the dojo app if you have any further questions.
Also, a big JazakhAllah to the parents who attended our assembly, I know as well as you do how hard the children worked to memories their lines. The children have loved this topic and gained a lot of insight on the life of an explorer as well as the difficulties they experienced on their journeys.
Here is a brief overview what we have been doing in class.
In English we have been reading The Diary of a Killer Cat. This book is based on a naughty cat who is causing a lot of trouble for his owners, however Tuffy the cat can’t understand what he’s doing wrong! The book is set out like a diary from Monday onwards, we have been reading a chapter every day.
We have been writing our predictions on what we think is going to happen next after we finish a chapter. Children have learnt the layout of a letter and have been writing in first person as one of the characters. We have also looked at questions we would like to ask Tuffy using question words.
We are still in the process of reading the and children are eager to find out what happens to Tuffy.
In math’s we have been recapping 2D shapes and what their properties are. We have also been looking at what shapes are symmetrical and what aren’t and placing them into venn diagrams.
Everyday I make time for mental math’s where children are learning their bonds to 20 by heart. When possible if you see a 2D or 3D shape, ask your child what Is the name? How many sides does it have? Are there straight lines in the shape of curvy lines?

Unfortunately the sudden news of the school closing next week didn’t give me much chance to set more homework!
During the holidays please revise with your children bonds to 10 and 20. Please also keep a 100 square with you and cover some numbers so that they can practise what comes before and after.
Example- covering 22, 32 and 42, what would the next number be in 10s?
We have also been working on < > less than and greater then. MashAllah the children understood the concept quite quickly. The method I used to to help them remember was the crocodile always likes to eat the bigger number.
Example – 46 > 22
Can all children please practise their high frequency words. These are words that they should know how to spell once they left year 1. It is vital they know how to spell these in order to reach the expected grade for year 2.
