Once upon a time at Suffah Nursery…

Assalamu Alaykum Parents 😊

Dinosaurs were discovered at Suffah Nursery this week! They turned up out of nowhere to surprise the children when they returned on Monday.

It was all very exciting for the children. To add to the fun, after each passing day the children walked into the dinosaurs getting up to all sorts of mischief!

Scroll down to find out!

Their sense of wonder, creativity and amazement were inspired as we told them ‘stories’ of how the teachers walked in everyday and found our little dinosaur friends in all different scenarios. Some of the children even wanted to have a sleepover at nursery to witness it all. It was endearing to see how engaged the children were as we unfolded a new story everyday mashaAllah.

In Arabic, children continued to practice the Arabic letters and words. Attached below is a video you can play at home to help them recognise Arabic words.

Circle Time

Circle time this week was full of surprises. After doing our regular routine, we described and discussed what the our dinosaur friends had been doing in the setting that morning.  They were completely mesmerised by the different things the dinosaurs got up to in their nursery. We later watched different educational videos about dinosaurs to further enlighten them.

Children were introduced to; the names of different dinosaurs, what they ate and how they looked. We encouraged everyone to think about their own personal dinosaur name.  For example, Teacher-asaurus!

We spoke about and described the time when dinosaurs existed and what their habitat looked like. To further enhance their understanding, we spent some time learning about volcanoes and even carried out a volcanic experiment to give the children a real-life experience (see Tuesday).

This week we discussed the importance of eating healthy too. Children played a game where they had to decide whether a food was healthy or not. For example, strawberries vs sweets or juice vs water.

We continued with the kindness box and encouraged children to do kind acts so we can reward them with a sticker.

We ended the circle time with going through the visual routine of the day.

Story Time

This week’s books were “Dinosaur Galore” and “10 little dinosaurs”.

Islamic Studies

This week we concentrated on the duas from the previous two weeks, Yunus AS’s dua and leaving the house dua.

Please do repeat these duas on a daily basis to help your child with the memorisation.

On Monday the children went out on a hunt for frozen dinosaur eggs!

Frozen dinosaur eggs!

We hid these frozen eggs all around the big playground and pretended to be archaeologists on a hunt for them. We then brought them in and watched them melt as the baby dinosaurs inside revealed themselves!

We told the children dinosaurs were hiding in different places to surprise them so we hid dinosaurs inside playdoh. As they all went around to find them they found it hilarious that they were hiding inside playdoh 😊

On Tuesday, our dinosaur buddies were so impressed by our circle time, they decided to have their own one! Children walked in on them all listening to Ustadha Sunbul-a-saurus, Maha-a-saurus and Zahrah-a-saurus. All the children identified their dinosaur version too.

The teacher-a-sauruss with their students…

Uh-oh, a volcano erupted in Nursery on Tuesday too! That morning we discussed how dinosaurs lived, what earth looked like around them and how there were lots of volcanoes around at the time.

We carried out an experiment using a mini volcano flask, vinegar, baking soda and red coloured paint.

Their reactions were priceless!

On Wednesday, the children walked in to find the dinosaurs having breakfast, however the baby dinosaurs were up to no good! Let me just say we found chocolate wrappers near all of them…

Dinosaurs eating bread but some had chocolates for breakfast

So, we all discussed healthy eating and how it can affect us. Children discussed whether the little dinosaurs did the right thing eating chocolate for breakfast?

We practiced phonic sounds on Wednesday and children tried to recognise other words with the first letter of their name, for example SSSS for Sunbul, SSS for Snake.

Try this at home: Continue speaking about the sounds in their name and any other words they can recognise that begin with the same sounds.

On Thursday the dinosaurs bought a present for the children… Lava seeds!

Children were told the dinosaurs saw how amazed we all were with the volcano so they bought us pomegranate ‘lava’ to share with us.

We then cut them all in pieces and the children really enjoyed picking out the seeds (whilst eating them too).

On Friday, all the dinosaur Teacher-a-sauruses weren’t feeling well unfortunately. Children walked in to find all three of them resting whilst the other dinosaurs looked after them.

Nursery children were very kind to join them and looked after the teacher-a-sauruses alhumdulillah. They made some serious observations and notes as to what could have possibly made them ill. Some concluded it might have been the chocolates and some said it was the weather because, “…Mummy and Daddy were ill too”.

We wish the teacher-a-saurus a speedy recovery and hope to find them in good health on Monday!

We ended the day with children attempting to draw their own versions of dinosaurs whilst practicing their pencil control too.

Alhumdulillah it was a very eventful week at Suffah Nursery.

We have requested the dinosaurs stay back for another week before they return back to their homes 😊
